“Renjishi” is a scene taken from “Kabuki,” a form of traditional Japanese theater. “Kabuki” is part of a series of performances by Izumono Okuni, first performed in 1603 and later becoming very popular in Kyoto. For 400 years, they have been the pride of Japanese art, but recently, Izumono Okuni's performances have also become very famous abroad. “Renjishi” was written by Mokuami Kawatake: it is a very moving story between a parent and a child. The plot: the parent throws his children into a ravine with the intention of raising and educating only the strongest children, those who will be skilled enough to climb back up the cliff.

The story, therefore, represented with a dance, is painted on the barrel of the Pelikan “Maki-e Renjishi” fountain pen: the parent Shishi, painted with white hair, and the child, with red hair, dance together wildly as in a real match. Painted by a master craftsman using the technique called Taka-maki-e.
